Phillips High School Football Team Qualifies for the IHSA Football Tournament

The Wendell Phillips Academy Wildcat Football team finished its conference schedule on Saturday undefeated by beating a strong Westinghouse team 28-16. This was the first conference championship for the Wildcat football program in 31 years. Their 7-0 conference record resulted in them qualifying for the IHSA Statewide Football Tournament for the first time in the schools illustrious history.

After a tough start against a couple of suburban teams the Wildcat Varsity started its journey to the conference championship and state playoff berth with the following victories:

September 10th: Wendell Phillips 24 - Phoenix Military 20
September 17th:  Wendell Phillips 33 - Payton Academy 18
September 24th:  Wendell Phillips 52 - Dyett 0
October 1st:   Wendell Phillips 42 - Chicago Ag & Sc 8
October 7th:   Wendell Phillips  48 - Bowen 0
October 15th:  Wendell Phillips 58 - Lindblom 0
October 22nd:  Wendell Phillips 28 - Westinghouse 16

The Wildcat Football team will be traveling to Rock Island Illinois  to play Rock Island Alleman High School in the first round of the IHSA Playoffs. Rock Island is located in the Western part of our state along the Mississipi River. Although the Alleman high school team has a long history of accomplishment in the state tournament, the Wildcats are confident they can play with them. They are all excited to be making the trip and playing in the state tournament and look forward to having a great experience.

The game will be played at Augustana College in Rock Island under the lights on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. During the course of the week as more information becomes available regarding scheduling and travel plans we will keep you apprised
