R.I.S.E. Club

Wendell Phillips Academy High School R.I.S.E. Club (Rewarding Intellectually Superior Efforts) is a comprehensive initiative to help students develop as college-minded leaders through intentional guidance programming for students who have earned Green (No F’s) and Yellow (no more than 1 F) status through academic data collection.  The R.I.S.E. Club seeks to prepare all students to be successful in their college and career choices.  Post-secondary education provides a life of options, rather than of limitations.  Phillips High School believes that college and a career path is the next step for everyone of our student.

The combined studies of the University of Chicago’s Consortium on Chicago School Research (CCSR) found that “there is strong evidence that racial/ethnic minorities and low-income students are much less likely to leave high school with the qualifications (e.g. test scores, grades, and coursework) that give them access to college, particularly four-year colleges and are critical to college performance and persistence (graduation).”  The R.I.S.E. Club at Phillips Academy High School seeks to address the complex needs of our students by providing programs and services in the following domains:

1. Academic (preparation and strategies
2. College/Career (correlating education and career preparation with individual participatory practices of the global world)
3. Personal/Social Emotional (raising expectations and aspirations of ethnic minorities and low income level students).

The R.I.S.E. Club at Phillips Academy seeks to help all students set and achieve high goals and embrace these important values:

1. Appreciation of academics
2. Desire to succeed
3. A drive to attend college and become a lifelong learner

These values are especially important for the students and families of Phillips Academy as we have a large concentration of:

1. Students entering high school grossly underprepared academically
2. Students from low income families
3. Underrepresented minorities (African-American and Hispanic)
4. 1st generation high school graduates
5. Potential 1st generation college students
6. Little to no exposure to college as an option
7. Social-emotional challenges that impede the learning process if not addressed aggressively and consistently.

The Mission of the R.I.S.E. Club
To reward and provide exposure and cultural experiences to Phillips students’ who are meeting academic and social emotional standards and to raise awareness among the campus community of what students need to do in high school to become “College Ready” so that they are prepared to positively participate in society and to be successful in their college and career choices.
Objectives:
Introduce participants to the critical issues that impact our students’ academic achievement, testing habits, course selection, post-secondary decisions and career development, through:

• Cultural immersion and exposure i.e. plays, dining establishments, museums, etc. (destinations in the city and suburbs).

• Special recognition and privileges for students on the Phillips Campus (special luncheons, awards, prizes, out-of uniform days, etc.)

• College visits for informed decision-making (campus tour, lunch in dining hall, bookstore to purchase memorabilia when funds are available.
