      3rd Quarter 2011

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Dear Disney Parents:

The PE department is excited to start off the 3rd quarter with a lot of energy!  We have multiple fun and engaging physical activities planned for our Disney students.  Throughout the 3rd quarter we will be covering volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, and re-introducing a unit on Fitness.

To begin the quarter, Disney students will continue to improve upon their basketball skills during the basketball unit.  Ball handling drills and offensive and defensive strategies will be covered throughout the unit.  Lower grades will participate in lead up games to improve upon their skills.  The unit will conclude with a basketball tournament in each class followed by a unit test, in the upper grades.

During the volleyball unit, the students will be learning the basic fundamentals of how to bump, set, spike, and serve volleyball.  Volleyball drills and lead up games will prep the students for mastery of these skills.  Eventually these skills will be assessed during volleyball games.  Lower grades will play Nucomb and Clean up your Yard: Volleyball, while the upper grades will participate in a volleyball game tournament.  In the upper grades, the unit will conclude with a volleyball unit test.

While in the Floor Hockey unit, the students will be participating in drills.  These drills will focus on improving their stick handling, passing, and shooting.  Lower grades will focus on learning the basic rules and regulations; while the upper grades will get into more game play. The unit will culminate with lead up games and a final floor hockey written assessment.

Finally, we are excited to re-introduce a Fitness-based unit to Disney!  We received a small grant from CFE which allowed us to purchase fitness equipment to help support our fitness curriculum.  We ordered body bars, resistance bands, fitness dice, and calisthenics station spots.  Throughout the fitness unit, our students will learn basic anatomy and physiology about their bodies.  We will also learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  We hope to inspire a lifetime a physical activity.  The fitness unit will be the final PE unit for 3rd quarter and will continue into the 4th quarter.  We will keep you posted on our progress!

One final reminder, please be sure to send your child to school with gym shoes on their gym day.  We know that it is cold and snowy outside, but students wearing boots to PE will not be allowed to participate.  Thank you for your ongoing support!

Happy 2012!
