      3rd Quarter 2011

ART:

All classes will start the quarter with an art contest sponsored by the Anticruelty Society Animal Expressions “Best Friends”.  Artwork can reflect their favorite animal, adopt don’t buy, provide a family for a homeless pet, or how can I help animals.  The contest will end February 10, 2012.  Please check out the Anticruelty website for more details.

We will continue using the Elements of Art and the Thinking Skills of observing, describing, questioning, investigating, comparing, connecting, reflecting, and responding by looking at the art in the classroom as well as visiting the Art Institute throughout the third quarter.

The kindergarten theme for the third quarter is animals in Art.  Students will look at "Don Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuniga" by Francisco Goya, "The Peaceable Kingdom" by Edward Hicks, and "The Sleeping Gypsy" by Henri Rousseau.  Students will look at several versions of "St. George and the Dragon" and make finger paint dragons.  Students will make a jungle collage based on "Hunting Tiger" by Henri Rousseau.  We will finish the quarter with a watercolor and ink painting based on the Chinese artist Shen Quan and his "Cat".

Our first grade theme for the quarter will be "The Year of the Dragon".  They will illustrate a Chinese Dragon on a paper scroll.  Students will look at "St. George and the Dragron" and create a dragon puppet and shield.  Students will conclude the quarter with a look at the Disney animated film "The Reluctant Dragon" and create a storyboard.

Second grade will look at "The Scream" by Edvard Munch and create an illustration of a frightening moment.  Students will make abstract faces based on the work of Pablo Picasso.  We will end the quarter will a look at the work of John James Audubon and his bird illustrations.  The students will design a bird postage stamp and a bird mask.

Third grade will look at paintings by Winslow Homer and create accordion books with short stories and illustrations based on the paintings.  Students will create landscapes and cityscapes using one and two point perspective and conclude the quarter with a foreshortening activity and figure drawing.
